MMA Gloves vs Boxing Gloves: What's the Difference?
Share
They both go on your hands and both are used to strike, but MMA gloves and boxing gloves are built for very different jobs. Using the wrong one for the wrong training can leave you under-protected or unable to do what the session demands. Here's how they differ and when to reach for each.
Open-finger vs closed design
MMA gloves are open-fingered so you can grip, clinch, and grapple. Your fingers are free to grab a wrist, control a collar, or post on the mat. Boxing gloves fully enclose the hand in a fixed, mitten-like shape — you can't open your hand, because you're never meant to grip anything.
Padding and weight
Boxing gloves carry far more padding, typically 8–16 oz, to protect the hand through thousands of full-power punches. MMA gloves are much lighter — often around 4–7 oz — with just enough padding to protect knuckles while keeping the hands nimble for grappling. That difference in padding is the biggest practical distinction between the two.
Boxing gloves protect the puncher and the punched. MMA gloves are a compromise that keeps your hands free to grapple.
Striking vs grappling
Because boxing gloves are large and heavily padded, they're ideal for high-volume striking on the bag, pads, and in sparring. MMA gloves let you flow between striking and grappling — punch, then shoot for a takedown or work a clinch — which is exactly what mixed martial arts demands.
When to use each
- Use boxing gloves for boxing classes, heavy bag work, pad rounds, and boxing sparring.
- Use MMA gloves for MMA sparring, grappling-integrated drills, and bag work in an MMA setting.
- Many fighters in the GTA own both, plus a set of hybrid or sparring MMA gloves with extra padding for harder sessions.
FAQ: Can I train boxing in MMA gloves?
Q: I do MMA — can I just use my MMA gloves for boxing sessions too?
A: For light shadow and technique work, sure. But for real bag rounds and sparring, switch to proper boxing gloves. Your hands and wrists need that extra padding to stay healthy over time.
