How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing: A Step-by-Step Guide
Partager
Hand wraps are the cheapest, most overlooked piece of protection in boxing — and the one that keeps you training pain-free for years. Good boxing wraps support your wrist, secure the small bones of the hand, and add a layer of padding under the glove. Here's why to wrap and exactly how to do it.
Why wrap at all?
Punching loads huge force through small bones and a delicate wrist. Wraps compress everything into a stable unit, reducing the risk of sprains and small fractures. They also soak up sweat so your gloves last longer and smell better. Skipping wraps is one of the most common ways new boxers pick up nagging hand injuries.
180-inch vs Mexican wraps
Standard 180-inch cotton wraps are breathable, quick to dry, and a great everyday choice. Mexican-style wraps blend in elastic, so they mould to your hand for a snugger, more custom fit — many boxers prefer them for sparring. Longer 180" wraps suit bigger hands and give more coverage; shorter wraps suit smaller hands.
The step-by-step sequence
- Loop the thumb hole over your thumb, wrap side down against the back of your hand.
- Wrap around the wrist three times for a stable base.
- Go up over the back of the hand and around the knuckles three times.
- Return to the wrist, then work between each finger, coming back to the wrist between passes.
- Do a final pass over the knuckles, then finish at the wrist and fasten the velcro.
Your hand should feel firm and supported. Make a fist — if it feels loose, rewrap tighter; if your fingers tingle, it's too tight.
A good wrap job feels like a second skin: snug across the knuckles, locked at the wrist, comfortable in a fist.
Caring for your wraps
Wraps absorb a lot of sweat, so wash them regularly. Fasten the velcro, place them in a mesh laundry bag to stop tangling, wash on a gentle cycle, and air dry. Rotate two or three pairs so you always have a clean, dry set ready.
FAQ: How long should my wraps be?
Q: What length should I buy?
A: For most adults, 180-inch wraps offer full coverage and wrist support. Smaller hands or youth boxers may prefer shorter wraps. If unsure, come in and we'll match the length to your hand.
